Lieut. J. F. Smith, of Co. F, 8th (aka 5th) Arkansas Cavalry, was Joseph F. (not John F.) Smith. He was enlisted at Hess Ferry, Arkansas, on January 9, 1863, by Capt. Brightwell, for three years or the war, and was elected third lieutenant, same date; age 37. He commanded the company from at least October, 1863, to the end of the war. He was paroled at Jacksonport, Arkansas, on June 5, 1865; age 40, still commanding the company.
