The 2nd Arkansas (Union) Cavalry's supply train was captured by guerrillas on May 3, 1864, at Richland Creek. The guerillas refused to take prisoners and killed all who fell into their hands. By time it was over thirty-nine 2nd Ark men lay dead. The “blood-craving ruffians” then plundered the wagons and burned them. They also shot dead about 100 of the captured mules.
