From the Weekly Argus, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, February 25, 1864:
The Grave of Jo. Porter - The Hannibal Courier gives the following extract from a letter written by the 3d Mo. Cavalry, at Jacksonport, Arkansas:
"Speaking of rebel officers reminds me of Jo. Porter. On our way from Little Rock we passed by the graveyard where he is buried. It is about eight miles from here. At the head of his grave stands a broad pine board with the Confederate flag painted on it, and this inscription:
Col. J. C. Porter
3d Mo. Cavalry, C.S.A.
Died Feb. 18, 1863
Pro aris et facis
He is said to have spent his last days in very religious devotion, and I sincerely hope his sins were forgiven him.
