1st Ark Mounted Vol. Battalion

In the Hindman papers of the PWA collection are a number of returns covering the early period of Hindmans command. In one return is listed the 1st Arkansas Battalion Mounted Volunteers, Commanded by Maj. William Gipson. the return is dated August 28, 1862 at Camp Madison Post, Marion County, Arks. The return shows a Major, an adjutant, Q.M., and Sgt Major. with five lettered companies, A thru E, a total strength of 407 men. In checking the Gerdes page shows Gipson Battalion, with two companies possibly transferred to the 2nd Arkansas, which is Carroll's regiment. Which leads to the next item, I have a return for Carroll's regiment, a consolidated report dated Sept 1, 1862, at Camp Armstrong with a Major L. L. Thomsan commanding regiment, dated September 1, 1862. In this return is listed eight companies A thru H, with a total strength of 609 men.

Question: Any idea which two companies were transferred to Carroll's regiment from Gipson, and then what happened to the other three?
