Re: Union Army at DeVall's Bluff
Here is an exerpt I have from a member of Co H 9th Kansas Cavalry while stationed at the "bluff". He was James A. Witten, formerly of Little Rock Arkansas before moving to Kansas late 1850's. He was writing to his cousin, William Witten of Saline County Arkansas who served in 24th Missouri Infantry (US), whose 3 brothers had all served and died for the Confederacy prior to the letter. The letter was dated March 15, 1865 from "Duvalls Bluff, Ark", only the part mentioned regarding DuVall's Bluff is included...."We are having a prety hard time here now. Our duty is very heavey. I am still coocking. We are having a great deal of reign here now. White River is all over the bottoms."...
Just a small snapshot of life at the bluff in a wet Arkansas springtime.
