Witherspoon's Arkansas Cavalry/13th Ark. Cavalry

I'm searching for information regarding Daniel H. Sanders from Hot Spring County, Ark. His widow, Elizabeth Sanders, applied for pension in 1892 and 1901. I have copies of the pension applications, Proof of Service and the cancelled check from the Arkansas History Commission.

My problem is that the pension applications show he was part of "Captain Proctor's Co. of Witherspoon's Battalion" and that he died 10 September 1863. The Proof of Service says the same battalion but says that he served from March 1863 until he died 28 August 1863. Both the applications and proof of service were witnessed by the same two men so I'm not sure why there are two dates of death. I do know that Elizabeth was illiterate and had to have help filling out the forms so maybe that had something to do with it.

When trying to research the unit he was with, I can find no information on Proctor's Co. and little on Witherspoon's Battalion except that it was formed in 1864 -- a year after the applications and proof of service show my ggggrandfather serving in that Battalion and dying in service. I also found one reference that said that Witherspoon's Battalion was part of the 13th Arkansas Cavalry.

If anyone can give me any information regarding Witherspoon's Battalion or have heard of Proctor's Co., I would appreciate hearing from you. Can anyone tell me what roll they played in the war -- areas fought in, battles,...?

Thank you,
Kim
