bush whackers Petit Jean Mt

letter sent from Truly Hudgins to his niece Sally (Hudgins) Brown on 11 Jan 1962.

I can remember the day my dad passed away. I was at the barn with other kids when some woman came & told us my dad was dead but everthing else is blank so by Uncle Truly. P.S. I didn't remember anything about the funeral and I never did learn what my grand dads first name was and grand dad Foster first name was Thomas that is where Early got his first name Thomas Early and I have got my grand dad Windhams first name but anyway he was to old to go to war so they lived in the Massey place on Petit Jane Mt on the South side of the creek and the bush whackers taken grand dad Windham out and strung him to a lim. So grand mother & other women took him down and buried him. Grand mother taken us kids to the tree where he was hanging so that was tuff. Well Sallie I will be 76 years old the 26th day of April of this year. I am able to drive the car some. We are all well at this time. I hope you are o.k.

Truly L Hudgins

Note: some miss spelled words. He talks about Early Hudgins . And the Man strung up was his Grandfather, Columbus Irvin Windham.
