Most interesting report. So this series of events happened during August 31 and Sept 1, 1864 in North Central Arkansas. Which raises further questions. Who was Capt. Franc? Who was Conly? Spanish Brown! What exactly was that, sap from a plant? Finally I find these events curious when one considers that General Jo Shelby had been placed in command of that part North Arkansas and was gathering troops. He made it clear that no one was to operate without orders, troops were to report for building up the brigades he was organizing at that time. If they were Mountain bushwhackers more so than rebs then that goes a long way towards explaining events. A final question in my mind is if Beatty's Mill was a water grist mill, then it was a source of supply for the rebs or bushwhackers. Was it burned or if not why not? By 64 a grist mill surviving that long without its destruction means either that it was protected by both sides or there were few operations in the area.

Thank you for info George, Vol. XLI is in four parts and is quite daunting to read at any time.
