Re: Co. D, 4th Arkansas Infantry

Drew, the closest thing to a Stewart who definitely served in a Lafayette County company was a Pvt. T. J. Stuart, who enlisted in Captain Abraham's Company Arkansas Mounted Volunteers on May 31, 1864.

Some Lafayette County men served in companies raised in neighboring counties -- Columbia and Hempstead, for example -- and in Louisiana units (such as the 31st Louisiana Infantry). A lot depended on what part of the county the men lived in. Some men from southern Lafayette County enlisted in Louisiana; from northern Lafayette County in Hempstead County; from eastern Lafayette County in Columbia County. And vice versa -- some Louisiana men enlisted in Lafayette County, etc.

If you'll let me know some details about the soldier you're researching (age, nativity, etc.), I'll poke around a little and see if I have anything in my files.
