In the record for Colonel Albert W. Johnson is a letter from R.W. Johnson to the president which states, in part:
"I feel great anxiety for Col. Albert W. Johnson. He is a tried and admirable officer, & his pride of character after rendering valuable & faithful service compelled him to resign & leave, or to shoot his superior officer. So he left command of a regt he raised & which was devoted to him."
At this time the regiment was in McRae's Brigade. Who is the officer he wanted to shoot? McRae? Hindman?
There is a thread elsewhere on the forum that says the resignation was due to conflict with junior grade officers.
