Alan, I can perhaps explain this. A book by Tom L. Johnson, Albert W.'s son, says that A. W. quarreled with Hindman over his (A.W.'s) refusal to court martial some of his young soldiers who went AWOL. The Alexander papers, 11-17-62, has Hindman saying A. W. resigned on H's request. H found A. W. to be often absent, a "stranger" to his regiment, with a "callous indifference to the interests of the service." BTW, Robert W. Johnson was A. W.'s cousin.
