Head Quarters Trans Miss District Little Rock Arks July 17, 1862. Colonel: Capt Reed and Lieut Wilcox have been assigned to duty as Captain and 1st Lieutenant of artillery and instructed to report to you. Gen. Hindman directs that you at once authorize Capt Reed to raise a volunteer Company of One Hundred and Twenty (120) men for his battery: and also direct the Chiefs of the Ord-nance, Quarter Master, and Commissary Departments at Fort Smith [Arkansas] to render all possible facilities towards equipping the battery for him. Respectfully R. [Robert] C. Newton A.A. Genl Col Chas [Charles] A. Carroll Comd'g N.W. Arks } [line break] Head Quarters Trans Miss District Little Rock Arks July 17, 1862. Captain: Genl [Thomas C.] Hindman directs that you accompany Capt Reed�s battery to Fort Smith. Col Hawpes, with his regiment now at Benton has been ordered to Fort Smith to move as rapidly as possible, leaving his wagon train behind him without an escort. You will, therefore, upon arriving at Dardanelle [Arkansas], provided the wagon train has not already reached there, wait until it does, and proceed with it from there to Fort Smith.
