Certificate of Disability for Discharge

John W. Townsend, Private, of Captain Charles S. Stark’s Company (B) of the First Regiment of Confederate States Arkansas, was enlisted by James C. Monroe on the Sixth day of May 1861, to serve one year: he was born in Polk in the State of Georgia; is nineteen years of age, five feet, eight inches high, Fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a Farmer. During the last two months said soldier has been unfit for duty sixty days. Said Townsend has been unfit for duty in consequence of receiving a blow on the Testacles, and still remains unfit.
Station: Camp Price near Acquia Creek, Va.

I certify, that I have carefully examined the said John W. Townsend of Captain Stark’s Company, and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Hydrocele following an injury of the Testucl? He had/s submitted to two operations [?] for “radicle cure” without receiving any benefit from either. /s/ Rawlings Goring [sp?] Surgeon
