Re: McBride's Infantry Battalion

I know Crawford wrote at least one letter describing his time with these men. They were in north Ark and he was having a hard time keeping them together. Desertion was a huge problem for him as they were up in the area where most were from. He mentions while in Carroll County he just furloughed them for two weeks so they could go and get their wheat crop in. At battle of Backbone Mnt outside Ft Smith, they were part that stampeded to the rear when battle began. Col John C. wright discusses that incident as well. Crawford, frustrated, evidently had enough and either resigned or got a transfer and organized a cavalry regiment of good ole south and central Arkansas boys who were a little more reliable....or maybe Harrell was better at dealing with the north Ark soldiers mentality while Crawford was a little too ardent in the cause. He enlisted 1861, served in Va with 1st Ark Inf, wounded at Shiloh, and promoted to LT Col. so he probably expected a little more military discipline and adherence to military lifestyle than they were willing to conform to.
