The Arms & Equipment in the Civil War Message Board

Re: 4th Tennessee Infantry - CS

I do not know what arms used but they were fairly trigger happy. At Shiloh Col. Randal Gibson was ordered to place his brigade in a place called Lost Field, the abandoned camp of the 4th Illinois Cavalry. At this time Hindman was in the woods to the left ofthe 4th Louisiana with Brigadier Gen. A. P.Stewart of the 4th TN. Hindman oradered Stewart to attack a battery in the next field, Review Field. At this time,Aaron Verter, a young aid of Gen. Hindman, had taken a captured Yankee battle flag and rode across the front of the 4th Louisiana. Verter was a nephew of Gen.Van Dorn. At 10 AM Verter was dressed in a blue Rebel uniform and was wearing a captured Yankee hat. He was mistaken by the 4th Louisana as a Ynkee ensign. He rode toward the 4th Louisiana on a white horse from left to right at a gallop. He was shot and killed by men of the St.Helena Rifles and Lafourche Guards. The 4th Tn regimewnt, posted in the woods to the right of the 4th Louisiana knew the young man. When he fell they assumed that the 4th La was a Union regiment and opened fire. A volley was poured into the ranks of the 4th La. Private Robertson of the 4th La claimed there were 105 men of the 4th La killed or wounded in this "friendly" fire. Col. Gibsons horse was shot and killed.
