Bart: I don't know what the experts use, but I have several old civil war cartridge boxes, cap boxes and belts some were flaking a little and dry.The best advice I got was NEETFOOT OIL COMPOUND. It darkened the leather back to black and made it softer and more plyable. I'm no expert but it worked for me. Larry
