John N. Gardner of Scranton is recorded as working during the years of 1879-1894, so the recut at least was done postwar. He was known for making "Heavy Forty Rod Rifles".

I agree with the others that the barrel was a Remington. Remington was selling barrels many years before selling complete guns, as I recall off the top of my head.
