I'd like to know if the use of slings was common in the Civil War. Were they just used as carrying straps or were they also used to brace the rifle for sharpshooting? I have a good picture of an old Charlville musket of the Revolutionary War period that has a sling swivel just forward of the trigger guard. Which Civil War muskets were so equiped?
