A sample of the Libary of Congress CW photos shows the Union forces using more slings than CS. Must have been a supply and priority issue. I have never read of using the sling to steady the musket and I don't believe it could be done easily since the sling's adjustment was somewhat cumbersome. Try a goggle search on "Civil War Rifle Slings" and see what you come up with.
