As to the Bess being used by the Confederacy, methinks the militia that replaced the regulars (volunteer soldiers) at Andersonville were equipped with Brown Bess flintlock muskets. The regulars, being soldiers, treated the PoWs with much more compassion than the young members of the militia. Shot a lot less of them too I understand.
