The infamous gunfighter John Wesley Hardin used a 1860 Army Colt 44 revolver that had an out of time cylinder. He recalled in his autobiography that while on a cattle drive along the Chisholm Trail in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), he chased two Mexican cattle rustlers riding horseback, with the reins in his teeth and firing his Colt Army 44 revolver with his right hand while holding the out of time cylinder in alignment with the barrel with the other hand!

Clint Eastwood never tried that!

By the way, that particular cattle drive that Wes Hardin participated in was in 1871 and was the last cattle drive the Snyder Brothers made on the Chisholm Trail from Georgetown in Williamson County Texas to Abilene Kansas. Due to the "Winchester Quarantine", stock fences and population incursion by land owners, the Snyder Brothers began using the "Snyder Cut-off" from Williamson County to the Western Trail in Brown County Texas and then north on the Western Trail through western Oklahoma to reach the railheads in Nebraska.

Charles Franklin Coffee was wrangler and then trail boss with the Snyder Brothers trail drives. C.F. Coffee's sister married John Wesley Snyder, one of the Snyder Brothers. C.F. Coffee became the trail boss on the cattle drives along the Western Trail from 1873 to 1892. Coffee established the "Hat Creek Cattle Company" (Lonesome Dove) in Wyoming and Nebraska and opened the largest packing house west of the Mississippi River at the railhead at Chadron Nebraska. C.F.Coffee is in the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City.

Charles Franklin Coffee served all four years in the civil war and was the son of Col. John Trousdale Coffee, commander of the 6th S.W. Missouri Cavalry,C.S.A. The home of John Wesley Snyder in Georgetown Texas was donated to the Southwestern State Teachers College and became their Fine Arts Building.
