I have a friend with a P53 Enfield Rifle dated 1856 which he bought at a farm sell in Michigan in the 1970s. Was supposedly carried in the Civil War by an ancestor of the farm "E. Jones". The rifle does not have a rear sight. Is this original or has the sight been lost. I can't see any place the rear sight was attached. Also what does the markings on the brass buttplate mean?
