He is wearing a long almost kneelength coat, but light colored pants. Other photos of Iowa Infantry that I have seen lately are wearing dark coats and pants. Do the lighter colored pants indicate anything particular, or the length of coat?

Is the sword a cavalry sword? Is there a difference between swords an infantry officer might carry from that of a cavalry man?
