Re: Union soldier with sword; THANKS BILL

Bill I am sorry it took so long to answer you. I was gone from home for a week. I fully agree with your match for the sword; after seeing some photos of that model I am sure you have nailed it.

Do you have a measurement from the bottom of the lower scabbard ring to the tip of the scabbard? If I am reading your description correctly it would be 20 and 1/2 inches? (from pommel tip to bottom of the lower scabbard ring is 16, and the over-all length is 36 1/2, therefore from the bottom of the lower ring (or the hem of his coat) should be 20 and 1/2.

Assuming the scabbard is touching the floor that would give us a measurement of basically the hem of his coat to the floor of 20 1/2 inches, plus the 16 to the level of the pommel is obviously the length of the sword and scabbard, 36 1/2.

Comparing the bottom of the second scabbard ring to pommel on the photo -16- it looks about like the same 16 inch distance going up to between the second and third button on his coat... for another 16 inches to that mark.

From between the second and third button to the top of his head is roughly just a few inches short of another 16 inch length. I judged maybe 14 inches? That is just a rough guess since his head is slightly tilted and the top isn't seen in the photo either. So we have 20 inches, plus 16, plus 16, plus 14 for roughly 66 inches?

Or roughly 5 foot 6 plus the 1/2 maybe. That is shorter than he looks, but he is pretty slim. I wonder if a similar sword was held by a modern man around 5-6 if it would line up just about the same level as the guy in this photo?

Anyway that is my guess. Does anyone else have a different take on it?
