I want to know if the steel vests worn by soldiers during the Civil War were comprised of a single piece of armor that covered the chest, two pieces that protected the chest and back, or, if both types of vests were produced.

I have found and been made aware of several references to steel vests, and all appear to be to a one-piece that covered the front of the body.
