I was watching the History Channel this morning and one of the episodes showed the trenches at Petersburg that were protecting Richmond. In that kind of fighting once the enemy invaded the trenches a shotgoun would be the weapon of choice I would think. We used a lot of old 97's in the trenches in WWI.
