mthomas2,

the 1816 was produced as a flintlock musket with a cock that carried a flintstone. The stone, when fired, hits a battery, producing sparks that ignite the powder in the pan, igniting the charge through a hole in the barrel. In the 1850ies and later many of these guns were altered to percussion ignition in different manner. The first arsenal alteration (called Belgian alteration)was made by boring a hole on the barrel, screwing in a nipple that holds an explosive percussion cap. The cock with the flint was changed for a hammer to hit the cap, exploding and igniting the charge through the nipple.

Best regards,
Marc
