Thanks. Also found this on the net regarding the rifling ot the Model 1842 Springfield.

Model 1842 Rifled Musket

Originally produced as a smooth bore percussion musket, these weapons were manufactured at the Springfield and Harpers Ferry Armories. From 1844 until 1855, over 250,000 were produced. The model 1842 was the standard arm of the U.S. Infantry until 1855. With the adoption of the Model 1855 rifled musket, many of these weapons were handed over to the state militias. What were left in the Federal Arsenals were sent back to Springfield or Harpers Ferry and were rebored as rifles. The rifling did little to improve their accuracy however since these weapons did not contain a rear sight. Many volunteer regiments were issued these weapons at the start of the war.
