The Civil War Flags Message Board

Re: State Guards of Pasquotank Flag

Hi Keith,

Your post to Ken Legendre come into my mail box, I guess a glitch in the system, maybe. I’m wondering, you say “North Carolina State Flag” which flag are you referring to? The State Troops had their own State flag before the adoption of the official State flag. State Troops usually carried a flag that had a blue field with the State Seal on the obverse and reverse but sometimes the reverse had the unit designation. This pattern goes back to the Rev. war. There is a debate on white or blue field, I’m on the blue field side.

As far as I know, the so called “hornets nest” flag wasn’t used in the Civil War period and there are questions of its use during the Rev., 1812 War and Mexican war.

Like me, I think Ken is looking for documented information, not speculation and assumptions, however, I don’t presume to be speaking for Ken. He does a good job of that on his own. He knows his craft. I have been on the receiving end of his questions, the facts, just the facts.

Happy Trails!
Tom Martin
