Tom,

Thanks for the information. I know some in Nevada jumped the gun on the July 4th date, as did Ford's Theater. In Kevin & Peter Keim's book "A Grand Old Flag," they seem to indicate that the 36-star flag on page 128 is a military flag used to celebrate the end of Civil War hostilities and the victory of the Federal military. Like the flag for sale by Jeff Bridgman Antiques, I don't believe either are proven Civil War regimental national colors.

I'm putting together a presentation on Union flags which I'll present to a couple of CWRTs in the next few months. I'm trying to find some photographs to cover a hospital flag in use and a 36-star regimental national color. Besides informing the CWRT members about these flags, another goal is to bring awareness to preservation efforts. I'm going to end my presentation with the flags in the Massachusetts National Guard Museum. The flags they have are from the 15th, 21st, 25, 34th, 51st, and 57th Massachusetts Infantry regiments. These may beyond restoration, but flags in some other states are not, such as New York, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, etc. See below.
