Re: Two captured flags at Chancellorsville

Great find Charles, I wish every state had a history like New York does.

I was reading two books my father mailed me, (History of the 1st Va Cav and 2nd VA Cav) and at the battle of Aldie, the 2nd Va Cav wrote they took two flags. One was a guidon from the 4th NY Cav, the other...?

Also the 6th NY Cav took on the 5th Va Cav, the 6th NY Cav got the better of the 5th Va and Stuart then called up the rest of that brigade and the 6th NY Cav retreated and dropped "Several of their guidons". (May 1st, 1863 at Todd's Tavern, road to Spotsylvania Court House). The 6th New York Cav lost 50 Pows and Lt. Colonel McVicars was killed.

(1st Virginia Cavalry history). They claim "6th New York Cavalry, threw away a number of their guidons (small flags), Picked up by our men."

I have evidence that Custer lost another Head Quarters Flag. On page 74 (1st Va Cav History) "Custer's HQ Wagon captured, papers, personal baggage etc. (Buckland, Virginia, aka Buckland Races).

Page 88, "Custer's HQ Wagon captured (again) June 11th, 1864 at Trevillian's Depot".

Gregg's Cavalry Union division was whipped twice in a day, "Salem Church" 100 Yanks captured and 2 Colonels". (Page 90).

Page 93, "Wilson's Union Cavalry Division--"Ream's Station", "Jarrett's Station", 600 Captured, 11 Artillery captured. "Wilson carried nothing back with him on wheels".

Page 106, "November 29th, 1864, Rosser attacked "New Creek, West Virginia", captured 8 guns, Garrison, 800 Pow's.

Page 113, "Jetersville, Va, kiled 30 Yanks, 150 Captured".

Page 114, "BG. Read? Killed, Colonel Washburn (MW), Union lost 780 Pow's, BG Dearing CSA Killed. The 123rd New York was captured and the other Union regiment is not mentioned. Two Union regiments were bagged.

Page 115, April 9th, 1865, "W.H.F Lee's Division, Rosser (Center), Munford (Extreme Right), 2,400 men total, attacked at sunrise, Union Cav division driven away, 2 artillery captured along with some Pow's.

Also some information that might help, at the Battle of Five Forks, the 17th Virginia did not lose their battle flag, the Color-Bearer hid the flag in his jacket. The Flag was divided and given to the men in the regiment. (History of the 17th Virginia Infantry regiment). Page 77. By Lee. A. Wallace, Jr

1st Va Cav, by Robert J. Driver Jr.

Now onto the the history of the 2nd Virginia Cavalry, by Robert J. Driver Jr and H.E. Howard.

Page 18, 1st Bull Run, Radford captured a "Standard" from the 69th New York Militia plus 2 artillery, 80 Pows. Two stands of colors, one was regimental, the other?

Page 87, (Aldie battle), Muford wrote, the "4th NY Cav" Colonel was captured (Col. Louis F. Di Cesnola) and his colors"
Major Breckenridge reported the "2nd Va Cav took, 35 pows, 1-Stand of Colors and 1 Guidon"

Well that is all so far. I am reading a few more books my friends sent me, I read the books too fast.

Have a great day, Charles! Good to hear from you, don't stop or give up!!
