Many Confederate flags were not listed or turned in to the War Department. Both governments wanted those captured flags to be turned in. The Union would give the Medal Of Honor and the Confederates either received a promotion or a thirty day furlough.

Even at Pickett's Charge, several Confederate flags captured were never turned in. They were taken home by Union officers for trophies and never heard from again.

Some flags that were captured were ripped up and lost forever.
