Daniel Carroll Toomey, Maryland historian and publisher (Toomey Press, Baltimore), has a book that may have slipped past notice here because of the title, "The Maryland Line Confederate Soldier's Home and Confederate Veterans' Organizations in Maryland." But the Soldier's Home (in Pikesville, Md.) had trophy flags and other memorabilia on display over the years, most on loan. Mr. Toomey has collated lists of those items and placed the result in an Appendix B ("Inventory of the Relic Hall") to his book, and, from a couple of pages of the appendix I've seen, it includes some tantalizing flags. For example, loaned by Bradley T. Johnson, the first Confederate flag (Stars and Bars) presented to Co. C, 1st Md (CS), at Richmond in May 1861; a Md State flag presented to 1st Md in Aug 1861 and used at parades and on bier of Gen Charles Sidney Winder; Battle Flag of 1st Md, with "Bucktail" attached, presented by Miss Hetty Cary 21 Jul 1861 and carried through Jackson's Valley Campaign. Other examples: Battle Flag of Pegram's arty bn; battle flag of McIntosh's arty bn, presented by Capt. McIntosh and borne all the way to Appomattox; flag of Cobb's Legion; flag of 7th Ga Cav; HQ flag of Cobb's brigade; flag of gunboat "Teaser" in the battle of Hampton Roads; flag of Stamford's Mississippi btry, Army of Tenn; Gen. Beauregard's battle flag; boat pennant from the "Merrimac;" Confederate flag from tug "Torpedo," battle of Hampton Roads; Confederate flag, third issue. (Examples from pp. 115 and 121.) This will be an idea of contents -- I haven't seen the entire book yet myself. Disposition after the Soldier's Home was given up is unknown to me -- I suppose some went back to the lender, others perhaps to UDC or other group and may have ended up in the collection of the Md. Hist. Soc. Still others... ? Could be an interesting new project for research. The provenance may be valuable if and when the accounting and the flag can be linked.
