Hi Charles,

More below:

>>>>>Wow, thanks, Greg. I am surprised to find out that one of these flags was still in service as late as Gettysburg. I was under the impression that Lee's army had re-equipped with "second" and "third buntings" prior to their movement north and that most, if not all, of the silk and cotton flags had been withdrawn from service. Learn something new every day, I guess.>>>>>

Those used at Gettysburg were in Ed Johnson's division which was supposed to have received a divisional issue of ANV Third Bunting flags prior to the campaign but was prevented from doing so thanks to a bunting shortage at the Richmond Depot. They did get these flags in late August, 1863. I did the research for the one that was previously unknown that was taken at GB and it was the 25th VA Infantry of Jones' Brigade.

An NC regiment lost their ANV silk issue at Gettysburg as well (3rd NC I believe).

>>>>I see from the MOC database that they are in possession of a large number of the first and second issue silk flags. The Arkansas Old State House Museum held a second issue silk that belonged to an "unknown" ANV unit. I understand that this flag was sent to Georgia. Did anyone ever connect it to a regiment? >>>>

The flag went to North Carolina as it was deduced that it was the flag of the 5th NC. Georgia does have an ANV silk for the 9th Texas Cavalry that was taken at Corinth in October, 1862. We think that William Cabell, then a QM officer in Richmond at the time of these flags being made, took some to the Trans-Miss when he was sent there and gave them to regiments. The flag was mistakenly IDd as the 1st Georgia Confederate, captured in the Battle of Atlanta, but an 1889 newspaper article describes that flag as being an Augusta Depot pattern. Somehow the ID for that got onto the ANV silk issue.

Ohio Historical Society has an unidentified ANV silk issue that was "discovered" when some things were being moved around a few years ago. A couple others of this issue have also turned up over the last decade including one that looks brand new.
