Re: Number of flags in a company

I was able to find a listing (though short) for Robert Holt in "Nothing But Glory: Pickett's Division at Gettysburg." This book is fairly good for unit rosters and descriptions, though sadly the 56th VA seems to have been one of a few units that didn't have as many complete records just prior to the battle. The listing for Robert Holt simply lists him as 2nd Sgt. for Company I, the "Charlotte Greys." Now if he was serving in that capacity at the battle he would be several paces to the left and rear of his company (unless it was on the left flak of the battalion). Most of the rest of Pickett's Division has color guards listed for Gettysburg (though smaller than average), but the 56th does not, so this means Robert Holt could have started off in a color guard and there just doesn't happen to be a record for it. The regiment appears to have been only carrying one flag that day which this source lists as being captured at the stone wall by the 71st PA (someone else may have info on additional flags). The list you have seen would probably be the number of men who were hit while carrying/guarding the colors. Since Robert Holt does not appear to have been wounded (in this source) he may have been captured while bearing the colors. Someone who has other sources may be able to fill in more missing information and help piece this story together for you. Hope this helps a little.
