I have reason to believe that Custer lost two of his Headquarters flags. He had four made during the war. One was recaptured at Saylor's Creek by Major Allestron (I spelled the name wrong). That just might be the flag at the Museum of Confederacy in Richmond. It is listed in the catalog.

I believe that Custer lost a flag at Buckland, Virginia aka "Buckland Races" as the Confederates called it. Custer lost his HQ Wagon with personal letters etc. Also at Trevilian Station, Custer again had his HQ Wagon captured. Only one flag is 110% for sure captured.
