Re: Union Flag Captured at Vicksburg, May 22, 1863

"[Col.] Boomer's [3rd Bdg.] foot soldiers saw the colors of the 7th Illinois and 22nd Iowa floating over Railroad Redoubt."

"The Yanks now succeeded in placing the colors of a third regiment, the 48th Ohio, on the work's parapet, alongside those
of the 22nd Iowa and 77th Illinois."

"At 5:30 p.m. the shrill Rebel yell was raised, and the Confederates led by Colonel Pettus and Captain Bradley surged forward,
sweeping all before them. The breach was sealed: the colors of the 77th Illinois were torn down by the victorious Texans and
sent to Colonel Waul. Soldiers of the 48th Ohio and 22nd Iowa succeeded in removing their flags before being driven into
the ditch."
