Shawn,
The 29th Ohio's claim to of capturing the colors of the 7th Louisiana
at Port Republic is very tenuous at best.
The only source for this claim is Si Cheverell's 1883 unit history of the
29th Ohio. In this the author states; (pg. 47)
"During this charge IT IS SAID that Allen Mason of Co. C, captured the
Colors of the 7th Louisiana Tigers".
Mason was not mentioned in ANY after-action reports, nor given a medal
for his supposed feat.
No member of the 7th Louisiana's Color Guard or Color Bearers can be
documented as being a casualty at Port Republic.
Finally, no trace of this "captured flag" can be found in the well-stocked
and documented Ohio Relic Room of the 1880's, or anywhere else for
that matter.
Unless new evidence arises; the claim of Mason's flag capture is very
doubtful.
