Re: 5th Co Washington Artillery flag

Hi Ken, The one that is in New Oreleans, the white border bunting issue. It is very interesting. The 2nd Company marking was made on the canvas hoist end. I am guessing that it was easier to hand letter on the canvas than try to hand letter the loose weave wool bunting. They added whipped stitched eyelets on the "bottom" wool bunting end which when turned to the right became the "hoist" side. That way, the marking would be on the top fly side. This of course is what makes sense to me. It is also pieced in several odd areas, across the bottom center field, the left bottom outer field and on the hoist (canvas) side center field. None of the seams go all the way across all three fields as the larger infantry sizes do.. I am finishing up the stars and will post a photo then.
