Re: History of the 30th Massachusetts Colors

Here's a small excerpt from the history of the flags that was given to me by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This is in reference to the "Ladies' Flag" that was carried at Cedar Creek.

"The 30th was in Massachusetts on Veterans furlough during March and April 1864. The dilapidated condition of its colors was noted by several "lady friends" of members of the regiment who took it upon themselves to procure a new color. The result, a magnificent color (1987.252) painted by Thomas Savory, with 35 gold stars, lettered with the 30th's battles up to that time, gold cord and tassels, the grip area of the staff wrapped in blue velvet, and topped by a gold eagle finial--was displayed in Boston on May 4 and 5, and forwarded to the regiment, by then returned to Louisiana."
