Re: Battleflag Issues to Jackson's Valley Army

Hello,

Actually, most of Jackson's regiments were not issued the ANV silk flags as they were a separate army at the time from the Army of the Potomac. A few of these silk flags did make it to the Army of the Valley but they were not part of the November-December silk flag issues at Centreville and nearby.

The first large scale issue of flags to Jackson's army came in May 1862. A soldier of the 12th Georgia, of his army, wrote that 25 flags had been presented to the troops in early May. These were the 12 star ANV style wool/cotton issues that were 42 inches square and bordered by orange tape. We had thought that these flags were only issued to Hood's Brigade, Elzey's Brigade and Steuart's Maryland Lin, two of whom served with the Army of the Northwest, but this letter from the Georgia soldier has changed that. The history of the 31st Virginia Infantry of this pattern states that Jackson gave the flag to the regiment on May 5, 1862.

These flags were made by some sewing circles and they mainly served as a stop gap banner until the wool bunting issues became in June 1862 from the Richmond Depot. Maybe 40 of the pattern were ever made.

Surviving flags of the pattern include: 18th Georgia Infantry (private collection); 5th Alabama Battalion (MOC); 25th Virginia Infantry (MOC); 1st Texas Infantry (Sharpsburg capture, Texas State Museum); 31st Virginia Infantry (UDC headquarters, Richmond, VA); 12th Georgia Infantry (Columbus GA City Museum). There's a couple more of these that have not been identified one of which was taken in the Wilderness in 1864 and is depicted in the "Arms & Equipment of the Confederacy" book. I may be forgetting a few.

As Jackson's army was integrated into the ANV during the Seven Days Campaign, the regiments got ANV wool bunting flags with 13 stars. This would take the rest of the summer and into the fall of 1862. The same thing happened when Magruder's Army of the Peninsula was also merged into the ANV at the same time. The ANV flags eventually replaced the distinctive flags of Magruder's army as well.

Hope this helps.
