Re: Eight Tenn captured Ohio National Flag

Exactly, you typed it perfectly. This is some flags I have found (I am sure you have them, but just in case.)

1) The 26th Tenneessee Infantry Regiment lost their flag on January 2nd, 1863. O.R 20, Page 408 that "Colonel John Miller's Brigade" captured the flag. On page 588, the Eleventh Kentucky Infantry Regiment (Union) admitted they captured the flag.

2) Colonel Cunningham's 28th Tenneessee Infantry Regiment captured the (9th Kentucky Infantry Regiment flag (Union), one flag, described as "Pretty bad". (Page 809)

3) The 86th Indiana Infantry Regiment, admitted to losing both of their flags. The problem is that no one knows what Colonel Vaughan's Tenneessee brigade alignment was. Peter Cozzens' book (No Better Place To Die) has the 13th Tenn------------------154th Tenn (On both flanks). The Blue&Grey agree on that. Now, either the 13th Tenn or the regiment to their right, captured the 86th Indiana colors. The 59th Ohio, colors were not captured. I will search for details on the 44th Indiana, they were in the eye of the storm.

4) The 101st Ohio lost both colors and was picked up by BG. Wood's brigade.

5) I have a report that a company of the 21st Ohio was captured. They may have/may have not lost/captured a flag with "Rock City Guards" flag captured. I am bit hazy on this issue.

As you well know only nine Union flags were turned in from the battle of Murfreesboro. Of that, only two were identified. I just enjoy the mystery of those unknow flags.

Keep up the hard work, I understand your pain. Once my niece types up everything, I will have a better understanding of Union Infantry flags, Union Cavalry flags/Guidons and Union Artillery/Battery flags captured. I have them written down in hundreds of notebooks, papers, notes, it's a mess. She is doing a great job getting that typed up on Excell. It was all my fault, I just never stopped to consolidate/type/organize. I was just a reading machine for nearly thirty years. So finally, we will see get it all together, I am positive we have found One-Thousand captured Union Flags (Our goal). But, there is still tons of work to do.

Have a good afternoon, Gregg
