Re: 1938 Article About Mississippi Civil War Flag

George,

Nice work as always.

According to Sifakis and Grady Howell, the 11th Mississippi Cavalry, formed as Perrin's Cavalry Regiment from Perrin's Cavalry Battalion (which formed in 1863 with nine companies), first fought in Mississippi against Sherman's Meridian expedition of February 1864. They became part of William "Red" Jackson's Cavalry Division for the Atlanta Campaign and were then transferred to Wheeler's Cavalry Corps for the March to the Sea campaign. They ended their war in North Carolina in 1865.

All of this shoots down completely the alleged early war combat history of the flag.

According to Howell's book on MIss. units the 11th Miss. Cav lost a flag at Selma but that would be pretty hard when they were serving in NC at the time.
