Flag taken by 12th New Jersey at Gettysburg

New Jersey is working to recover their Civil War records and began their project with the 12th New Jersey regiment. A 1910 letter from George Wesley Spring is posted online. Spring was reportedly enrolled as a Sergeant of Company H in August 1862, but rose to become Captain of the company, commanding it from the Wilderness (5 May 1864) to the end of the war. Spring writes that Company H was the Color Company. "At Gettysburg, July 3rd 1863, Corporal Carlos O'M Putnam boldly advanced beyond the line and captured the colors of an Alabama Regt. and placed them in the hands of Major Hill - commanding our regiment. This flag I presume is among others kept in the arsenal at Trenton." The Soldiers and Sailors database lists Carlos O. M. Putnam as a Corporal in Company H, 12th New Jersey.
