The 5th bunting issue battleflag of the 9th Va Cavalry, carried by Walter Scott Callis, Co. B, (the color company) was cut from it's staff and smuggled home to Caroline County, VA. without being surrendered at Appomattox. Remaining in family hands it became the property of my friend, the late Jay Phillips. Callis was his gg grandfather from his mother's side of the family. Before Jay passed from a fight with cancer less than a year ago he sold the flag and it was auctioned by Julia's in Maine. It resides in California now. It was 44.5 inches on the hoist and 50 inches on the fly. It had a 5 inch blue cross with half inch fimbration and 1.5 inch border. The star spacing was 8.75 inches on center. I attribute the overall difference in dimensions to fabric shrinkage on the hoist and fabric stretch on the fly from battlefield usage. My speculation. I held this flag in my hands before it was sold. I was humbled and honored to have had this experience. The flag was in relatively poor condition. Greg was a tremendous help in proving the authenticity of this flag. I have some pics of the flag as it is now. You can see one of these pics on facebook at www.facebook.com/3rdrichmondhowitzers.
