In brief... and generalized...
The 26th Va was unfortunately part of Wises Legion/Brigade. After spending some time in 1861 out in Western Va while Wise and Floyd had their series of ego spats. Both Wise and Floyd were former Governors of Va, gained military status predominately due to political influences, and couldnt stand each other. Wise was pulled back to Richmond and sent to NC... which resulted in the debacle at Roanoke Island.... Again brought back to Richmond, spent much of 1862 in Eastern and Central Va on garrison. Most of 62 spent at Chaffins Bluff, a regional encampment south of Richmond on the north side of the James River. A minor participant during one segment of the Seven Days battles nearby. Wise continued to be his typical self... so was sent far far away as possible from Richmond... Spent nearly all of 1863 on uneventful garrison and secondary district duty down in South Carolina... Not untill the kick off of the Overland Campaign in 1864 did they get recalled back to Va in May 1864. Attached under Beauregards Dept of Southside Va, NC & SC... was present during the Bermunda Hundred Campaign... evolving into the Siege of Petersburg... Its first actual real participation in major battle came in July64 at Battle of the Crater. Served in the trenches around Petersburg till April 1865, then the Appomattox Campaign.... Losing a good number at Sailors Creek/Marshalls Cross Roads...

The ANV style Battle flag labeled as associated to the 26th Va in the collection at MOC is one of the mystery late war 12 star ANV battle flags that I researched on a couple years ago. This was a replacement flag issued approx around Nov 1864... What they might have had or carried just prior to this is not known that Im aware of. Most flag data of units of Wises Brigade is missing, and very few related have survived.

Huge gaps of surviving records exist with Wise Brigade and the units assigned within. Most of what has been gleened and known has come from secondary sources.

Weapons... Most of Wises Brigade begain the war issued un-converted flint-lock muskets, which evidence suggests they still had in their possession through at least early 1862. In 1862 while at Chaffins Bluff ammunition issues of mostly 69 caliber with some 58's. Most Ord records reflect the calibers of weapons present and in use, not necessarily what type or model they were. Front line and active troops generally got the better weapons. In 1864 back in Virginia, the Brigade had a mix of 69's, 58's, 57's and 54's, per Ord ammunition issues. Enfields.. there were some present in latter 1864.... "CS marked" Enfields... I knew exactly what you meant... These being British Enfields with a particular export stamp marking that were only sold/shipped to the Confederacy.. Not an implication that they were CS made... nor literally marked "CS"...

Uniforms.... These evolved over the course of the war. Early commutations, then later Richmond Depot. Little is known what they might have been issued or procured while they were in SC. Back in Virginia would have been under the Richmond Depot issues same as most all others in the ANV theater of action.
