Re: 26th Virginia Infantry Regt.

Flintlocks... absolutely. In those early first few months states had to muster up whatever had been sitting about collecting dust for decades in various state armories. Virginia was far behind the curve of converting the older flintlocks over to percussion weapons. So had to dish out what they had available.

Richmond Armory itself issued out about 42K long arms in the April-June 1861 time frame when most of these state regiments were originally mustered up, The State of Virginia using its own existant resources to arm and equip its own troops for it defence at that time. 65 percent of the weapons issued were still in their original flintlock configuration. Overall majority being M1816's, with much smaller number mixes of Va Armory (M1812), and US M1795, and various others. Majority of the converted arms were also of the M1816's (9K), a relative handfull of Va Armory (379). A comparitively small number of original percussion arms were on hand; M1842 - 3700, M1855 - 12, 1841 Miss - 668. This is what these guys had available and in their hands for the first months or year at least of the war. After June 1861 the Virginia/Richmond Armory was turned over to the Confederate Central Government.

Wise had initially put dib's on a cache of 400 new Enfields that were reportedly around. However Virginia traded those to North Carolina for some other needed goods before Wise could snatch them... Wise ended up with old flintlocks same as many other newly mustered units did....

Florida... Wise Brigade was ordered up to assist regional forces at what became the Battle of Ocala, but arrived too late to participate actively in the engagement less a minor skirmish the day after. Returning to SC.
Sept 1864 they would have been sitting in the muddy trenches of Petersburg... If your ancestor was present with his unit Im sure he got more than he wanted too...
