Re: 6th LA Infantry, Co. D Flag

Apparently this flag is not the one at Memorial Hall. Here's more. In late May 1861 the regiment was camped near Fairfax Courthouse when it learned that Union cavalry was approaching. “In the midst of what seemed to me to be great confusion, our company color bearers, approached our Captain, and asked him to give him an order to take care of our beautiful flag personally, but the Captain refused, and ordered him to deposit it in the Mess Chest. He did so. There was no other alternative, but to obey. This action proved to be both sad and sorrowful, so far as the members of our company were concerned, for in twenty minutes after the regiment evacuation, the Yankee Calvery [sic] had occupied the camp, thus capturing all food stuffs, officers tents, some army clothing, and the worst feature of all, our flag, lost gone forever, and never seen again by any member of the company.”
