Regiments of the U. S. Army were not always authorized the carry an Ameican flag in addition to their regimental color. By the time of the Mexican War infantry and artillery regiments were were authorized to carry the Stars and Stripes, but cavalry regiments did not get them until the 1890's. Before they were authorized to carry an American Flag, the need was sometimes met by carrying a eagle canton or national eagle flag. Does anyone know if sone U. S. Regular and Volunteer cavalry regiments carried national eagle flags during the Civil War?
