Recovery of 5th Virginia flag at Gaines' Mill

The James Mercer Garnett Papers at the University of Charlottesville contains a folder entitled, Civil War - University Memorial, with handwritten notes by an unidentified author. This author references McHenry Howard's book, Recollections of a Maryland Confederate Soldier and Staff Officer. In his book, Howard wrote of Gaines' Mill (part of the Seven Days Battles in 1862) that he "saw the flag of some regiment (Virginia, I think,) lying on abandoned on the ground. I did not stop for it ..." The above notes had this to say about what appears to be the same subject, "I picked up a flag that had been dropped in the sudden encounter [after sunset] ... rode along the line to see where it belonged. Two regiments were without flags. I first rode to Capt. Raleigh Colston, commanding the Second Virginia regiment, and asked if it were his flag. He replied, "No sir, I left mine back with the wagon train.' I then went to Major Williams, commanding the 5th Virginia, and asked him. He looked over his regiment and replied, 'Well, I reckon it might be.' I presented it to him to return to his color bearer."
